Ohio’s Multi-Agency Radio Communication System (MARCS) debuted in 2015. Having identified safety as their top concern, Lewisburg residents were excited about the new cell tower that now allows their own first responders to link-in. As the Register-Herald reports, the town gathered to hear speeches from Mayor Marsha Jones and other public officials who welcomed the Lewisburg tower into the MARCS network.
“In 2018,” said Jones, “A strategic plan was developed to improve the quality of life in our community. Safety was identified as the number one priority. Lewisburg’s mission to develop a thriving community to lead by example, and present opportunities for others to contribute to a safe, healthy and desirable place to live, work, play and visit was defined.” Jones added that the MARCS tower would benefit all the towns within its radius, and offered thanks to all those who helped get the tower built.
“This is everybody going for a common goal,” agreed Sheriff Mike Simpson. “And at the end, about two or three weeks ago, after this tower came online, when we went to our or manufacturing facilities, which is one of our major concerns, we found nowhere in those — including our schools here in town, nowhere we did not have communications in a 180 degree turn from where we were. So, it’s a big deal in not only Lewisburg, Harrison Township, southeast Darke County, northwest Montgomery County — all this area here is benefiting from this tower.”
There are now approximately 360 MARCS towers spread out across Ohio, noted the Register-Herald. The system is designed to withstand all sorts of emergency conditions to maintain connectivity for emergency personnel at all times. The MARCS system employs mobile voice, mobile data, GPS-based auto vehicle location, computer assisted dispatch, resource recommendation, and display services.
Lewisburg’s new tower is expected to operate until 2039, when it is anticipated that it will need an overhaul. Operating around the clock, the MARCS Program Office oversees, maintains, and repairs all elements of the MARCS system.
